Zupjok-Iago-Great Bear Loop - December 21, 2013

You know it’s going to be an interesting day when the first decision you make is to blindly follow the wrong group of skiers, and that’s exactly how our day started. Max, Alexis, and I aimed to ski Iago and Great Bear, but thanks to some unintentional groupthink and no one checking a map, we began our day skinning confidently toward Zupjok.

Was it a mistake? Technically, yes. But considering I’d never been up Zupjok before, I chose to call it “bonus peak” and pretended it was part of the plan all along.

This was my first time skiing with Max, and let's just say: it was like trying to keep up with a human avalanche (but in a good way). He’s fast, strong, and skis like the mountain personally insulted him. Alexis, as always, was smooth and efficient, a mountain goat in human form.

Meanwhile, I was somewhere in between, doing my best to pretend I wasn’t gasping for air every time we hit another climb. Skiing between these two felt like being in a YouTube “before and after” fitness transformation video.
