Bagging Whirlwind on Skis

Alexis invited me on an overnight ski trip to Russet Lake with the goal of bagging Whirlwind Peak ,  and honestly, with a peak involved, how could I say no? I reached out to Adrien, Ben, and Alex to see if they wanted to join, but unfortunately Adrien and Ben couldn’t make it. I warned Alexis that Alex and I were pretty new to skiing and didn’t want to hold anyone back.

The trip started with some delays (mostly me, of course), but in the end, it turned out to be a great success. The Singing Pass Trail is definitely longer than I remembered ,  I’d done it in 2.5-3 hours on snowshoes before, but this time it took us about 5 hours to reach the hut. Maybe I was just faster back then, or it was the hike out that took less time!

The night was bitterly cold, and we woke up at 7:22 am sharp, quickly had breakfast, packed up, and set off to bag Whirlwind Peak. The usual wind and cold were there to greet us. The upper slopes were windswept and tricky, demanding some solid edging skills both for skinning up and skiing down. Thankfully, the snow on the glacier was excellent, and we got to enjoy some fantastic turns.

On the way out, we skied through the Musical Bumps back towards Whistler Village. I fell way behind because my skins had frozen solid and refused to stick , had to stop and give them a little ‘cooking’ to get them working again.

At one point, we lost Alex while skiing through the resort ,  he took a wrong turn but managed to find his way back to the village eventually.

All in all, it was a fantastic weekend. Huge thanks to Alexis for taking the newbies up the mountain and making it a memorable trip!
