Silver Cup Ridge Run, Kootenay

July 01, 2014

Spent 4 days running around the Kootenay area with Max and Olesya, including what was supposed to be a “nice, long” run along Silvercup Ridge. For those who don’t know, Silvercup Ridge is a dramatic sawtooth ridge that looms over Trout Lake north of the Goat Range, and at 40 km long, it sounds like a great idea… on paper.

We kicked things off by driving down the gravel road on Hwy 31 to the southeast end of Trout Lake, where we camped out. Bright and early the next morning, we started running from the camp, planning to cover the route from Rady Creek to Rue du Beau Creek (SE to NW). Easy, right?

Well, the trail is a charming mix of old mine roadways, horse trails, and hiking paths, winding through meadows and alpine basins. It’s apparently popular with snowmobilers, hunters, horse riders, and hikers alike,  we hit the ridge, our “run” slowed down dramatically. Instead of graceful strides, we found ourselves post-holing waist-deep in snow, channeling our inner penguins and occasionally flailing like confused moose. At times, it felt less like a scenic run and more like an unintentional CrossFit workout with snow as the main opponent.

Mining remnants along the ridge looked impressed… or maybe they were just amused watching three humans struggle to keep moving forward.

In short: Silvercup Ridge is stunning, challenging, and will definitely humble even the toughest runners. But hey, we survived, laughed a lot, and now have some epic stories to tell around the campfire. Next time, maybe less running, more snowshoes!

  1. Wow what a great pic you have given in the midst of us. One has to go to the best tourist place which is most suitable for the tourist to visit during the holidays. I too have visited this place in the month of march from Bhopal . That was one of the best moment which we had there. I cant forget the moment which we had in that days.
