Alex, Ben, and I set out with big dreams to ski Mount Ling via Cantelon Creek Valley, a relatively obscure peak hiding between Chilliwack and Silverhope drainages. Because why take the easy, obvious peaks when you can chase the mysterious and slightly intimidating?
We managed to tame the Silver-Skagit FSR with our trusty Subarus, cruising until the 20km mark where we turned off toward Cantelon Creek. From there, it was skinning time, long, but easy enough, up a road that somehow decided to keep climbing forever. Deep down in the valley, we felt like true explorers... until the weather decided to throw a tantrum.
Once we hit the end of the cutblock, the skies went full drama queen on us, so we gracefully bowed out and turned back. No Mount Ling summit for us this time, but hey, the skiing down the logging road made up for it. Nothing like freewheeling downhill with the wind in your face and the satisfaction of not face-planting.
Then came the grand finale: the drive home on the Silver-Skagit FSR, aka “Ice Rink Road.” Even crawling at 5-15 km/h, our cars had other plans, turning our journey into an impromptu figure skating performance. At one point, my car did a full spin, luckily stopping just shy of becoming a submarine in the lake. Definitely the highlight (or lowlight?) of the trip.
If you want to test your skiing AND your driving skills, Silver-Skagit Valley’s got you covered.
