Pasayten Wilderness- Billygoat Loop

Yesterday, Max and I made the drive down to Winthrop, Washington, to take on an 84km loop through the Pasayten Wilderness in the Wenatchee-Okanogan National Forests.

The route delivered in full: stunning landscapes, sweeping alpine vistas, and an overwhelming sense of remoteness. One of the most striking features of the trip was the aftermath of the 2002 forest fires—the scale of the burn was immense. For kilometres on end, we ran through ghost forests, their charred trunks stretching skyward like a skeletal army. It was surreal and oddly beautiful.

Not all was smooth sailing, of course, sections of trail were heavily overgrown, forcing us into some hands-on bushwhacking. A few navigation challenges kept things spicy, especially near the end.

Just as we were approaching Larch Pass, the skies opened up with a solid soaking. But in true mountain drama fashion, the rain gave way to a double rainbow, arching over the valley as we found our way back on track. A cinematic ending to a wild, rugged day out.

84km, unforgettable terrain, and a full-spectrum wilderness experience.
