Thunder Creek to Rainy Pass Traverse, North Cascade WA

August 02, 2014

Max and I set out for an epic long weekend run through the North Cascades, starting at Colonial Creek Campground near Diablo Lake and finishing at Rainy Pass, a classic point-to-point traverse.

We kicked off on the well-maintained Thunder Creek Trail, enjoying smooth running as we climbed gradually towards Park Creek Pass. The views from the pass were stunning, with alpine meadows and sweeping valley vistas.

From the pass, we dropped down the other side, transitioning onto Bridge Creek Trail. The trail stayed in great shape, but there were two minor creek crossings where we gladly got our feet wet, it’s always good to be prepared for a splash or two in the Cascades!

For the final 3 km, instead of taking the trail, we opted to run along the highway road into Rainy Pass. Not exactly trail running, but after nearly 70 km on foot, it was a convenient way to finish up.

All told, we covered a solid 71 km over beautiful, mostly runnable terrain with some creek fording and a bit of road running to cap it off.
