After crewing for Alex at Fatdog120 on Saturday, I drove back to Vancouver Sunday morning and ran over 60km on the course. The next day, Damien and I planned to run Castle Towers. Last month, Alejandro had invited me to run with them, but I had a KK race, so this was my first time running with Damien. I’d heard he’s fast, his name is always near the top in races.
We started from Helm Creek trail. I was worried I wouldn’t keep up since I was running on little sleep and feeling off. Damien said he was coming off an injury and would be slow, so at least we were on the same page! The switchback run to Helm campground was enjoyable, with Damien setting the pace.
We reached the campground in under an hour, and I have to say, I’ve never seen it so busy, tents everywhere! It felt more like the city than the backcountry, but it was great to see so many people out enjoying the outdoors.
From there, we headed over Helm Glacier, down to Gentian Pass, and up Polonium Ridge. We made it to the sub-summit in 3:58, where we met another party of two. One went on to the true summit while the other stayed behind. On the descent to the col, Damien recognized one of the guys, Kieran Lumb, 2016 Redbull 400 champion. We continued and reached the summit at 4:19.
We retraced our steps back to the car. All in all, a fun trip with Damien. Our car-to-car time was 7 hours and 30 minutes.
