Alex and I set out to bag some peaks in the Joffre area, Mount Taylor, Tszil Mountain, Duffey Peak, and Twin Goat. Feeling adventurous, we decided not to retrace our steps back to Duffey Peak. Instead, we chose the “brilliant” plan of descending the north side of the ridge and traversing just below Duffey’s summit to the East ridge of NW1.
Instead of a straightforward hike out, we opted for a scenic bushwhack through the twilight zone, think bluffs, a graveyard of deadfall, and enough scratches to look like we wrestled with a porcupine. By the time darkness hit, we were basically auditioning for a survival reality show.
No worries though, we hitched a ride back to the car (because why not?), and then promptly collapsed into our tents at midnight, probably looking like exhausted zombies.
Would we do it again? Absolutely, but next time with a better map... and maybe some bug spray.
